We discussed Elk City being informed by dance tracks and experimental rock in prior projects, having a multi-year gap between records and why it felt right to craft another record now, auditioning in dank basements, their latest album Everybody's Insecure, their improvisational-heavy methodology for crafting their latest album, the development of Elk City's fluid storytelling within the lyrical content, some of the compilation records they've been on and the intrinsic fun of covering other artists' music, having their music in a movie and their involvement in the Super Bowl, having a life-sized Paul Stanley cut out in their studio, and more!

On this BTB installment, I spoke with "The Big Cat" Jesse Arnett after Dekada Contender. I covered a few topics with Canada's number one Bantamweight including: representing Champion pugilists from the West, how his training partners performed on the Dekada Contender card, his upcoming TKO title defense against Nate Maness at TKO 44 on September 21st, this next fight being the last on his TKO contract, his future potentially including a run with ONE Championship or UFC, the mindset of watching a training partner fight as opposed to the mentality of being in the ring yourself, taking care of his puppy instead of partying, and much more!

On Bowks Talking Bouts #101, It was great having MMA veteran/ Boxing pro Dwayne Lewis and top ranked pugilist Kandi Wyatt on BTB prior to their respective fights set for Dekada Contender on September 8th.
I spoke with Dwayne about taking on Anton Tokarchuk Sept 8th and how combat is his drug, differences between Boxing and MMA culture (2:14), getting to regularly put in work with Steve Claggett and the camaraderie of training with others in combat (3:49), wanting redemption after losing his last pro Boxing bout to Lee Mein (6:09), overcoming an enormous hematoma and a broken jaw in separate fights as well as the mindset that it takes to push through those things (8:45), wanting to solely pursue Boxing going forward and how a brutal back injury is preventing an MMA return for Dwayne (10:24), Dwayne's openness to train to any genre music-wise (13:19), and more.
Kandi came on the show at (15:03) and we covered a few topics as well. We discussed who Kandi has been putting in the work with ahead of this fight, the benefit of training with Amateur fighters and the invaluable experience of taking part in that amateur circuit before turning Pro (15:56), being part of Western Canada's Boxing rise and the contingent of pugilists raising their profile in Calgary nowadays (17:25), the developments in Kandi's mental game after being in the co-main event for her last Dekada bout (18:34), Kandi's thoughts on being so close to getting a title bout in the future (19:52), being lined up with Guadalupe Lincer Ortiz on Sept 8th and her preparations for her specific opponent (20:58), whether or not this current era we're in is a banner era for Women's Boxing (22:05), "Country" training to the Rocky Theme song everyday and being open to people playing whatever genres during training (23:09), and even more!

I spoke with Robert Poss ahead of the release of his album, Frozen Flowers Curse The Day.
We discussed writing music for modern dance companies, his prior efforts with Band of Susans, soundtrack efforts in composing for film and television, his methodology for field recordings, providing music for BBC /PBS /Discovery Channel/ National Geographic projects, providing music for YTV years back and what that meant for me as a Canadian youth at the time, performing alongside groups like Dinosaur JR and My Bloody Valentine, playing Max's Kansas City and CBGB's back in the day, early communal spaces as a budding musician/ music fan, seeing Kinks and Rolling Stones in their prime, unwittingly playing guitar in a derivative bluesy style and punk helping him move towards his own unique guitar sound, Steve Albini's praising of Robert's unique drone oriented guitar playing approach, Band of Susans welcoming in guitar players who had never picked up the instrument before, using five string and twelve string electrics as part of his rig set-up, getting into alternate tunings in the mid-80's, the delightful challenges of doing a live mix for Suicide, and more!

We talked about performing in GP yet again, playing concerts at houses and court houses alike, their debut collaborative album Two, their vast solo careers and if the individual efforts inform their G&C music, having enough material for a sophomore record, the benefits of teaching guitarists and helming workshops, producer efforts and whether that informs the musician role, having their own personalized Gunning and Cormier brand of beer, and more!
