I spoke with Robert Poss ahead of the release of his album, Frozen Flowers Curse The Day.
We discussed writing music for modern dance companies, his prior efforts with Band of Susans, soundtrack efforts in composing for film and television, his methodology for field recordings, providing music for BBC /PBS /Discovery Channel/ National Geographic projects, providing music for YTV years back and what that meant for me as a Canadian youth at the time, performing alongside groups like Dinosaur JR and My Bloody Valentine, playing Max's Kansas City and CBGB's back in the day, early communal spaces as a budding musician/ music fan, seeing Kinks and Rolling Stones in their prime, unwittingly playing guitar in a derivative bluesy style and punk helping him move towards his own unique guitar sound, Steve Albini's praising of Robert's unique drone oriented guitar playing approach, Band of Susans welcoming in guitar players who had never picked up the instrument before, using five string and twelve string electrics as part of his rig set-up, getting into alternate tunings in the mid-80's, the delightful challenges of doing a live mix for Suicide, and more!
