I spoke with the immensely talented Lisa Said and here are some rough notes of what we discussed......
-Formative records= early Beatles, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon........more folk in high school.......Elvis Costello and the Attractions from there...........CBGB' punk phase after that.........Velvet Underground, The Who, Neil Young,
-Started wanting to play bass in a band......A buddy eventually helped her with playing chords on guitar
-Felt it was late for her to learn but she wanted to learn bass with her free time in Nashville
-12 or 13 years ago, the learning process began.....Kept writing songs on the side for years........Recording it and committing it to memory.......didn't sonically fit with her other bands but the songs stuck with her.
-Long hiatus from playing........Didn't see it as a hiatus. Just wasn't thinking she would play live anymore.
-2008 in DC......Last band until the break happened. Six years off......
-Then a big life change happened........With a focus on recording now being in sight. Not so keen on the live performance aspect.
-Home recordings were done before but the recent effort was a more professional environment.....Learned the finer aspects of mastering and many other sonic considerations.....
-The hectic nature of different schedules can make it difficult to be in a band......Focused on relationships and others during hiatus.........Was super focused on music prior to that
-Art rock, garage rock, and a metal group.......Sister Ex was the metal band......Rocking the curlier hair back in the day.......
-Key relationship with Don as producer......Taken care of, relaxed.......
-Didn't know the process as much..........Working with Don allowed Lisa to learn about the recording process as things go along.......DIY-esque
-Collabing with others.........Sometimes others can steamroll you with their ideas and heir agenda. In certain groups, persistent peers can control the narrative fiercely
-Estranged......Two years recording "No Turn Left Behind"........Estranged had songs from early last year and were cut in November.......Two month recording process
-Hesitance of Egyptian elements in her music......Tested it with relatives who liked it. Rhythms distinctly used Egyptian folk.......
-Keeping in touch with records she loved but also seeking out new artists for inspiration.......
-Small venues, house parties, and open mics have been so inspirational......The honesty of intimate shows is powerful.......
-Recently met her live guitarist Darien at a recent house party......
-Getting back to bass and cut some lines on her last EP.....Left handed bass player......Wasn't as a confident going in to this recording based on respect for the instrument....Hadn't been playing or going through as many bass scales as much......Lot of respect or bass but was worried about a potential lack of dexterity.......
-Wants to create music that makes people roller skate dance..........Sometimes though there's that juxtaposition with the lyrics and the bounciness of the instrumentals underneath........
-Not a big rig person........Dates back to lugging around gear in her bass days......Has guitar rigs she likes though......People will give her info on what sounds good......Aspires to have less equipment......
-In boxing exercise class......One reason she went to boxing classes is because they play better music there......Other workout classes play remixes of super repetitive tracks.............
-Lisa's observations that I'm a combat sports lover based on my bio.......
