I had a great talk with Jay Aston of Gene Loves Jezebel. Here are some rough notes for the topics we covered:
-Loves folk tunes.....Lots of older brothers.......60's tunes........Brian Wilson, Neil Young,.....Joni Mitchell......Drawn to a lot of Canadian artists.....Leonard Cohen.....
-The journey is to be original and to be authentic
-Key record stores and venues.........Spillers Records was a renowned store that was a must to go to......
-More articulate with music as the years have gone on. More of an openness to learn things now as compared to when he was younger. Bigger wheelhouse of sonic references to go to.
-Wants to make people happy.....It's much more fun
-Don't need to know many chords to write songs
-A song is quite an easy things to write.......Mechanics of using fingers and certain details like that are focused on at his point in his musical journeyÂ
-No rules to music. Don't worry about who's judging you. Tastes change and popping sounds change with time. Be the authentic you........
-Solo work quite different from the more fluid chemistry with band mates....
-Yamahas kicking around......(prior notes for specific model)....That Yamaha was the first guitar he knowingly purchased thinking "I want this particular instrument".....More of a tool mindset; utility.....Means to an end
-12 quid for a guitar...When a guitar just feels right in your hands.......Always learning......Certain ways of changing fretting pressure can make a world of difference.....
-99 dollar Epiphone Les Paul......My discounted SG that feels right....
-Solo work makes him feel raw and exposed but there's a playful, total lack of pressure feel since it's separate from Gene Loves Jezebel.....
-Really affected by atmosphere of the room at a gig......Has broken down in tears at certain performances....
-The new album brought the boys back........For a while though, it was jamming a couple times for big shows a year
-Songs to benefit the homeless gig Jay played.......Hikes a lot and sees homeless people......New York, Atlanta, LA........
-Full homeless families........Ties in to my life with the TWIN I put together on Niagara Region Homelessness.......
-Spent winter in London.......worked on record and things went smoothly......It was a gas......
-Legal drama with his brother almost resulted in the latest album not being an official Gene Loves Jezebel record.....
-Cathartic to do the record after all the negativity and drama with his brother/ former bandmate........
-Barry Barlow; Jethro Tull drummer produced last album.......(studio name in prior prep notes).....Remembering the Uncle Haanz studio.....Maybe a Jethro Tull presence in the studio is key to capturing a mint recording.....
-Brilliant guy.....Barry gave extra time; was very intense though.....Sometimes would spend month on records but this latest was very bang, bang, bang.........
-"Unpopular Songs".........early solo record......Writing process.........
-Notebooks in the past but never end up using the stuff....
-Guitar in hand or mic in front........Things just come to him......
-Big fan of the loop pedal......No perfect.....right or wrong way to put together music.....
-Gets others to listen to tracks......Doesn't feel like he's a good judge of his own tracks.....
-Pledge Music allowed the new record o happen.....Huge appreciation for fans.....Always sharing pics fans send to them w/ band merch, records, etc......Finds he direct interaction amazing......
-Didn't know what Led Zeppelin looked like as a kid.....
-Too much focus on a carefully crafted aesthetic based on attire can take away from music.......Aspect of the game to have a particular look that correlates with the sound.....
-Got into music for music.......Not for sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll..........
